Phillip Leder was an American geneticist who, in the Nirenberg–Leder experiment, helped decipher how the genetic code is read, and later made landmark discoveries about how antibody diversity is generated and about cancer genes, co-creating the first patented genetically engineered animal. He was a founding chair of genetics at Harvard Medical School. He was born in Washington, D.C., to a Jewish family.
