Kurland was a constitutional scholar at the University of Chicago, a leading authority on the Supreme Court and church–state separation, founder of 'The Supreme Court Review' and co-editor of the five-volume 'The Founders' Constitution'. Born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, he clerked for Justice Felix Frankfurter. He also advised the Senate during the Watergate inquiry.
