Peter Benenson is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — British lawyer who founded Amnesty International (Nobel Peace Prize 1977)
Benenson came from a prominent Anglo-Jewish family — his maternal grandfather was the Russian-Jewish financier Grigori Benenson — though he himself converted to Catholicism in 1958. A British lawyer, he was moved by the imprisonment of people for their beliefs and in 1961 launched the 'Appeal for Amnesty', founding Amnesty International to defend prisoners of conscience worldwide. The organization he created received the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize for its human-rights work.
