Alfred Fried is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Austrian pacifist; Nobel Peace Prize (1911) for founding the German peace movement
Fried, a self-taught Viennese Jewish bookseller and publisher, devoted himself to the organized peace movement rather than to academic study. With Bertha von Suttner he founded the German peace society and edited influential pacifist journals, arguing that lasting peace required building international law and institutions, not mere goodwill. For this work of 'organizing pacifism' he shared the 1911 Nobel Peace Prize.
