Bator was a Hungarian-born American legal scholar who emigrated as a child and became a leading authority on the federal courts, best known for his landmark 1963 article on finality in criminal cases and federal habeas corpus. He taught at Harvard and the University of Chicago and served as Deputy Solicitor General. He was born into a Jewish family in Budapest.
