Onkelos is recognized among Jewish contributors to Historical & Religious Figures — Author of Targum Onkelos, the authoritative Aramaic translation of the Torah
Onkelos was a Roman convert to Judaism of the 1st–2nd century CE, traditionally credited with 'Targum Onkelos', the authoritative Aramaic translation of the Torah still printed in most Hebrew Bibles. The translation renders the Hebrew text carefully while smoothing anthropomorphic expressions, and became the standard Jewish Aramaic version. He was a proselyte (a convert to Judaism) associated with the Tannaitic sages of the Land of Israel.
