How & why

Joseph Caro authored the Shulchan Aruch, the concise code that became the standard reference of Jewish law, and its vast underlying commentary the Beit Yosef. Driven from Iberia by the expulsions, he settled in Safed and made it a center of Jewish legal and mystical scholarship. He was a Jewish rabbi and halakhic authority.
