Rodrigues was a French mathematician, banker and social reformer remembered for Rodrigues' formula for Legendre polynomials and for the Euler–Rodrigues formula describing the composition of rotations in space, an early anticipation of quaternions. A follower of Saint-Simon, he also wrote on social reform. He was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Bordeaux.
