Mark Kac was a Polish-American mathematician who helped found modern probability theory and its links to physics, co-created the Feynman–Kac formula, and posed the famous question 'Can one hear the shape of a drum?'; he received the Birkhoff Prize in 1978. Born to a Jewish family, he emigrated from Poland to the United States before World War II. He taught at Cornell and Rockefeller Universities.
