Neuwirth, an Austrian composer of Jewish descent whose family concealed their identity during the Nazi era, became one of the leading voices of contemporary music theatre, working across live electronics, film and sociopolitical themes. Her opera 'Orlando' was the first by a woman commissioned for the main stage of the Vienna State Opera, and she has repeatedly confronted Austria's history of antisemitism in her work. She received the Wolf Prize in Arts (Music) in 2021.
