How & why

Neal Koblitz is an American mathematician at the University of Washington who, independently of Victor Miller, co-invented elliptic-curve cryptography in the mid-1980s. That method underpins much of modern secure communication, from web encryption to cryptocurrencies. He also introduced hyperelliptic-curve cryptography and works in number theory. He is Jewish.
