Biography

Nathan Cummings is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — Built Consolidated Foods — later named Sara Lee — from a single Baltimore sugar house; art collector and philanthropist.

How & why

Born Nathan Komiensky to a Jewish family in Canada, the son of a shoemaker, Nathan Cummings bought a small Baltimore sugar house in 1939 and rolled it, acquisition by acquisition, into Consolidated Foods — renamed Sara Lee after its most famous cheesecake. One of the great American food fortunes, it funded one of the great American art collections, and the Nathan Cummings Foundation still gives in his name to social justice and the arts.
