Michael Milken is an American financier born in 1946 to a Jewish family in Encino, California. At Drexel Burnham Lambert he developed the modern high-yield ('junk') bond market, transforming corporate finance in the 1980s. He was convicted of securities-law violations in 1990 and later received a presidential pardon; he went on to found the Milken Institute and become a major funder of medical research.
