How & why

Milton Babbitt was an American composer and music theorist who extended twelve-tone serialism into rigorous total serialism and was a pioneer of electronic music, notably with the RCA Mark II synthesizer at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. A longtime Princeton professor, he received a special Pulitzer Prize citation for his lifetime contribution to music. He was born to a Jewish family in Philadelphia and raised in Jackson, Mississippi.
