Kernis is an American classical composer whose lyrical, richly colored music won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Music (String Quartet No. 2, 'Musica Instrumentalis') and the Grawemeyer Award, and who has taught composition at the Yale School of Music. His works are widely performed by major orchestras and ensembles. He was born to a Jewish family and is Jewish.
