Michał Kalecki was a Polish economist who independently developed a theory of effective demand and business cycles closely anticipating Keynes, and made lasting contributions to the economics of growth, distribution and monopoly. Born into a Jewish family in Łódź, he was of documented Jewish origin. He worked in Britain and international institutions before returning to Poland.
