Michael Sipser is an American theoretical computer scientist at MIT, a pioneer of computational complexity theory known for circuit-complexity lower bounds and the adiabatic quantum algorithm, and author of the widely used textbook Introduction to the Theory of Computation. He served as head of MIT's mathematics department and dean of its School of Science; his grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe.
