Michael Rossmann is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Structural biologist who solved the first atomic structure of a virus and identified the Rossmann fold.
Rossmann was a structural biologist who solved the first atomic structure of a virus (a common-cold rhinovirus) in 1985 and identified the recurring nucleotide-binding motif now called the Rossmann fold; he pioneered methods such as molecular replacement that underpin modern crystallography. Born to a Jewish mother in Frankfurt, he was sent to England as a child in 1939 to escape Nazi Germany, and spent his career at Purdue University.
