How & why

Michael S. Levine is an American developmental biologist known for pioneering work on the genetic regulation of embryonic pattern formation, including the cis-regulatory logic of enhancers that controls gene expression during development in the fruit fly Drosophila. He has led laboratories at UC Berkeley and directs the Lewis-Sigler Institute at Princeton, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He is listed among noted Jewish biomedical scientists; general biographies say little about his religious background.
