Berry, born in England to a Jewish family, discovered in 1984 the geometric phase (now called the Berry phase), showing that a quantum system carried slowly around a cycle retains a measurable memory of its path, independent of time and energy. The concept now appears throughout optics, condensed-matter physics and beyond.
