Meyer Lansky (born Meyer Suchowljansky) was an American organized-crime figure and financier. He was born into a Jewish family in Grodno in the Russian Empire and emigrated to New York as a child. Late in life he unsuccessfully sought to settle in Israel under the Law of Return.
