How & why
Jean-Marie Lustiger was born Aaron Lustiger in Paris to Polish-Jewish immigrant parents; his mother was murdered at Auschwitz. He converted to Catholicism as a teenager in 1940 and rose to become Cardinal Archbishop of Paris. Though he left Judaism religiously, he always insisted he remained a Jew by birth and identity.
