Melford Spiro is recognized among Israeli contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Psychological anthropologist known for studies of the Israeli kibbutz and Burmese Buddhism
Melford Spiro was a psychological anthropologist whose field studies of an Israeli kibbutz, of Burmese (Myanmar) Buddhism and of family life tested psychoanalytic ideas against cross-cultural evidence. Born to a Jewish family in Cleveland, he helped found the anthropology department at the University of California, San Diego. His kibbutz research on collective child-rearing became a landmark of the culture-and-personality tradition.
