A German-Jewish businessman and one of the great racing drivers of the 1920s — wins at Avus, Solitude, the Kasseler Herkules hillclimb — Adolf Rosenberger put up the money that started Porsche. In 1931 he founded Porsche GmbH together with Ferdinand Porsche and Anton Piëch, running its commercial side; he is also credited with steering Porsche toward the mid-engined layout of the Auto Union racing cars. Then Hitler came to power: Rosenberger was arrested for 'Rassenschande', imprisoned at the Kislau concentration camp, released only when a colleague bribed the Gestapo, and forced to leave Germany at once.
His shareholding was taken from him under Aryanization. He reached America in 1939 and became a citizen as Alan Arthur Robert, dying in Los Angeles in 1967. In 2022 — ninety-one years after the founding — Porsche commissioned a historical study to correct its own account of him.
