How & why

Trained first as a chemical engineer, Perl turned to physics and, working at Stanford's accelerator in the 1970s, painstakingly identified an unexpected heavy relative of the electron, the tau lepton, revealing a third generation of matter. The discovery earned him the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics. He was born in New York to Jewish immigrants from Poland.
