Reiner was one of the founders of modern rheology: he coined the term 'rheology' with Eugene Bingham and introduced the Deborah number, naming it after a verse in the biblical Song of Deborah. A civil engineer who emigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1922, he served Jerusalem's public works before becoming a professor at Israel's Technion. He was Jewish.
