Mark Rothko (born Markus Rothkowitz) was an American painter and a leading figure of Abstract Expressionism who pioneered Color Field painting, with his signature canvases of luminous, floating rectangles of color meant to evoke deep emotion. His work is among the most celebrated of 20th-century American art. Born to a Jewish family in Dvinsk in the Russian Empire, he emigrated as a child to Portland, Oregon.
