Known as Chaïm Soutine, he was a leading Expressionist painter and central figure of the Jewish School of Paris (École de Paris), famed for turbulent portraits, landscapes, and carcass still lifes. He was born to a poor Lithuanian-Jewish family in a shtetl near Minsk and emigrated to Paris around 1913. Hiding from the Nazi occupation, he died in Paris in 1943 following surgery for a perforated ulcer.
