How & why

Chaim Soutine was a Belarusian-French expressionist painter of the Ecole de Paris, born into a poor Jewish family near Minsk. His turbulent, thickly painted portraits, landscapes and studies of carcasses became landmarks of expressionism. Living in France, he hid from the Nazi occupation as a Jew and died during the war after emergency surgery.
