Mordell was a number theorist who proved that the rational points on an elliptic curve form a finitely generated group (the Mordell–Weil theorem) and posed the Mordell conjecture on the finiteness of rational points on higher-genus curves, later proved by Faltings. American-born, he spent his career in Britain, notably at Manchester and Cambridge. He was the son of a Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant.
