How & why

Lothar Nordheim was a theoretical physicist who co-developed the Fowler–Nordheim theory of electron field emission and made early contributions to quantum theory of metals and to nuclear physics. A German Jew, he fled the Nazi regime, emigrating via the Netherlands to the United States, where he worked at Purdue, on the Manhattan Project era reactor programs, and at Duke and General Atomics.
