Lipman Bers was a Latvian-born American mathematician who made deep contributions to complex analysis, partial differential equations and, most famously, Teichmüller theory and the theory of Kleinian groups. Fleeing antisemitism and the rise of Nazism, he emigrated to the United States and became a leader in his field and an advocate for human rights. He was Jewish.
