Lily Renée Willheim grew up in a Jewish family in Vienna and escaped the Nazis at seventeen on a Kindertransport to England, reaching New York with nothing. At Fiction House she became one of the first women of comics' Golden Age, drawing Jane Martin, The Werewolf Hunter and above all Señorita Rio — a glamorous counter-spy fighting Nazis, drawn by a refugee from Hitler. Rediscovered decades later, she was honored at Comic-Con, told in the children's graphic biography Lily Renée, Escape Artist, and decorated by Austria. She died in 2022 at 101.
