Lew Grade was born Lev Isaakovich Winogradsky to Jewish parents in Tokmak, in the Russian Empire. In 1912, when he was five, the family escaped the pogroms by leaving Odessa for London via Berlin, and settled off Brick Lane in the East End. He was a champion Charleston dancer before becoming a talent agent, and in 1954 he founded the Incorporated Television Company — ITC — to sell British programmes abroad. It worked: Thunderbirds, The Prisoner, The Saint and The Muppet Show went round the world from an office in London.
His brothers Bernard Delfont and Leslie Grade ran rival empires of their own. He is buried in the Liberal Jewish Cemetery at Willesden.
