Writing as Lemony Snicket, he published A Series of Unfortunate Events from 1999, thirteen books whose narrator warns children away from the story he is telling them; the series sold in the tens of millions and was adapted for cinema and for Netflix. He also writes novels for adults and plays the accordion on his own audiobooks.
