Leopold Auerbach was a German anatomist and neuropathologist who discovered the myenteric (Auerbach's) plexus, the network of nerves in the gut wall that controls intestinal movement, a fundamental finding in neuroanatomy. He was among the pioneers of staining techniques for nerve tissue. He was Jewish, and antisemitic discrimination in the German academic system limited his advancement despite his achievements.
