How & why
Leon Kirchner was an American composer, pianist and conductor who won the 1967 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his Third String Quartet. A student of Schoenberg and Ernest Bloch, he taught for many years at Harvard, influencing generations of musicians. He was born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn and raised in Los Angeles.
