Löwenthal, born to a Jewish family in Frankfurt, was a member of the Frankfurt School and a pioneer of the sociology of literature and mass culture. Fleeing Nazism, he emigrated to the United States, where he analyzed popular biography, propaganda and the culture industry. He later taught sociology at Berkeley.
