Paul Lazarsfeld was a founder of modern empirical sociology and quantitative mass-communication research, pioneering survey methods, panel studies and the 'two-step flow' of media influence. At Columbia University he built the Bureau of Applied Social Research, a model for empirical social science. Born to a Jewish family in Vienna, he emigrated to the United States after the rise of Nazism.
