Fishman was the founder of the sociology of language, whose studies of bilingualism, language planning and 'reversing language shift' created a field for understanding how communities maintain or lose their languages. He was among the most influential scholars of minority and endangered languages. A deeply committed Jew and Yiddishist, he championed the Yiddish language and wrote extensively in it.
