Guth, son of physicist Alan Guth and of a Jewish family, is an MIT mathematician who develops the 'polynomial method' in combinatorics and metric geometry. His work — including a celebrated solution with Nets Katz of the Erdős distinct distances problem — introduced algebraic tools that resolved long-open questions. He has received the Bôcher Prize and the New Horizons in Mathematics Prize.
