Simon was an American economist who argued that human ingenuity — the 'ultimate resource' — tends to overcome resource scarcity, so that population growth need not spell disaster. He won the famous Simon–Ehrlich wager (1980–1990) when the prices of five metals fell despite rising population, a striking test of his optimism about resources. His ideas also influenced airline practice by proposing compensation for volunteers on overbooked flights. He was Jewish.
