Origins and early life
Josué Lifshitz, Yehoshua by his Hebrew name, was born at Kherson in Ukraine on 3 December 1896 and died at Ivry-sur-Seine on 17 November 1993, at the age of ninety-six; the sources call him a French Jew and a member of the Resistance, and his parents were among the founders of Tel Aviv.
Work and career
He went to Palestine in 1912 and served in the First World War first in the Turkish and then in the British army, coming out of it with decorations. He arrived in France in 1920, took degrees in mathematics and in electrical engineering and worked as an engineer from 1924 to 1940. At Lyon in 1942 he placed Jews on farms where they could pass unnoticed and forged identity papers under the assumed name of Henri Robert Champagnac, which became his Resistance name.
He joined La Sixième, the clandestine arm of the Jewish scouts that hid children and made false documents, and in 1943 he commanded its military group at Limoges. He was arrested at Périgueux on 11 May 1944 and held for four months, was released on 20 August 1944 and served as a captain of the French Forces of the Interior. After the war he was deputy director of the Cojasor, the committee for Jewish reconstruction, and took part in the clandestine emigration of Moroccan Jews to Israel before resigning in 1949, the year his Resistance service was formally recognised.
