How & why

Origins and early life

Achille Naftalis, born Ichil Naftalis at Bacău in Romania on 30 December 1909, came from a traditionalist and Zionist Jewish family; he died at Petah Tikva in Israel on 29 January 1984. He took his doctorate in medicine in 1936 with a thesis on cerebral tetanus and was naturalised French on 13 July 1937.

Work and career

He enlisted on 4 November 1938 and served as a medical officer with the 21st infantry regiment, carrying out, in the words of his citation, a very arduous service through the battle of France until 7 June 1940. Taken prisoner, he was held in 1940 and 1941, and his fellow captives called him the good doctor. From 1941 to 1944 he was a member of the Resistance in the group of Versailles-Thiverval. After the war he practised in Paris, served as an occupational physician for international firms and gave free consultations to those who could not pay.

In the Jewish community he was an administrator of the synagogue of the rue des Tournelles and president of the synagogue Adath Israël. He held the Croix de guerre 1939-1945, awarded in 1941, the medal of French gratitude granted in 1947 and the combatant's cross.
