How & why

Origins and early life

Gilbert May was born at Strasbourg on 14 February 1925 and died on 12 October 2013, at the age of eighty-eight; he was one of the very few Alsatian Jews deported to the camp of Natzweiler-Struthof, on French soil.

Work and career

He studied law at the University of Strasbourg, whose faculties had been evacuated to Clermont-Ferrand. He entered the Resistance in 1943, hiding Jewish children and forging identity papers for those who had to disappear from the records to survive. In 1944 he joined the Libération-Sud movement and the maquis of the Creuse; his father was shot by the militia on 4 July 1944. He was himself deported to Struthof on 30 August 1944 as prisoner number 26645, and was liberated by the American army at Dachau on 29 April 1945. He returned to Alsace and built a business career in wine, metal packaging and the manufacture of clothing.

Recognition

He gave the rest of his life to memory, holding office in the associations of the deported and of the Resistance, serving as honorary president of the LICRA in Strasbourg, and going year after year into schools to tell the young what he had seen.
