Dorfman was an American economist and historian of economic thought whose five-volume 'The Economic Mind in American Civilization' remains a landmark, and whose biography of Thorstein Veblen was long definitive. Born to a Jewish family in the Russian Empire, he emigrated to the United States and taught for decades at Columbia University. He was a leading chronicler of American economic ideas.
