Biography

Josef Fried is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Chemist who pioneered fluorinated steroids, greatly improving corticosteroid drugs

How & why

Josef Fried was a Polish-American organic chemist who discovered that substituting fluorine at the 9-position of cortisone-type steroids sharply increases their anti-inflammatory potency, a breakthrough that produced fluorinated corticosteroids such as fludrocortisone and transformed the treatment of inflammatory, endocrine and skin disorders. He held some 200 patents and taught at the University of Chicago. He was born into a Jewish family in Przemyśl.
