Jose ben Jose is the earliest payyetan (liturgical poet) known to us by name, active in the Land of Israel around the 4th–6th centuries CE. He composed piyyutim for the High Holy Days, including 'avodah' poems recounting the Yom Kippur Temple service. His work stands at the roots of the Hebrew liturgical poetry that shaped Jewish worship. He was a Jew of Byzantine-era Palestine.
