Jonathan Larson is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Creator of Rent; posthumous Pulitzer Prize (1996)
Larson was a Jewish American composer, lyricist and playwright who created the rock musical 'Rent', a modern retelling of 'La Bohème' set among struggling New York artists. He died suddenly of an aortic aneurysm the night before its first off-Broadway preview in 1996; the show went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, awarded to him posthumously. Born in Mount Vernon, New York, he had worked years as a waiter while writing.
