American medical researcher and virologist. He discovered and developed one of the first successful polio vaccines.

How & why

Jonas Salk was an American medical researcher who developed the first safe and effective inactivated polio vaccine, announced in 1955, ending waves of epidemics that had paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children. He famously declined to patent it so it could reach as many people as possible. The son of Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire, he was raised in a Jewish family in New York.
